I prefer to go by what the Bible tells me they are. Unlike humans, angels are messengers and helpers in contact with God, as servants between mankind and God. The Bible as states that mankind is preferred over the angels in His eyes. We are told in most spiritual literature that they are the messengers and guardians from God. In our history and in the Bible, they have always played an important role. The Bible tells us that it was angel Gabriel that came to the Virgin Mary and announced to her that she had been chosen by God to bear His son, the Christ, and to name him Jesus.
Some angels help us and protect us from harm as well, and are titled Guardian Angels. So why do we need a messenger or a guardian angel? I do not have the answers to this, but the Bible tells us that none of those who contacted "The Living God" could look upon him. So perhaps the angels are there so we can see God through their eyes. God so loves us that He not only answers our prayers, but also sends us angels to protect us from harm and evil.
We are in a time of a lot of change on this earth, and some say that we are in the end times because of the wars, Christian persecution, and natural disasters that are going on in the present day, such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and hurricanes that we are experiencing at a more than normal rate from our past history; and the reported appearances of angels seems to be on the rise as well. Perhaps people are praying to God more with our needs being so great these days? Angels have always been there for us, but do not intercede without invitation because this would interfere with our free will. I find that when I feel the most hopeless and pray, God sometimes sends an angel come to help. They are an asset in our lives, and truly show God's love for us. But we can never forget that God is paramount, for without him neither mankind nor angels would exist. And without Jesus' death to pay for our sins, and His resurrection, we would never make it to heaven.
